Our History

The Buchannan family from South Carolina, who originally farmed in the immediate area, watches over the house through a photo of the family that hangs at the bottom of the stairs.

The house was built in 1908 and the family stayed until 1928. The house then passed through three owners over a short period of time and was repossessed during the Great Depression. In 1935 Mr. and Mrs. Charles and Mary Fuller bought the house and converted it into a lodging house. Many of the guests were railway workers; Mr. Fuller worked for Union Pacific. They added the back third of the house (in a contrasting Colonial style), including all plumbing!

The original home was built by the Buchannan family. It remained in the family for more than 20 years.

The house then passed through three owners in a short period of time and was repossessed during the Great Depression.

Mr. & Mrs Charles and Mary Fuller bought the house and converted it into a lodging home.

Current owner and innkeeper, Katrina Stilwell, bought the house then remodeling and upgrading it throughout.

Though the Fullers ran several guest houses in the area, 235 is the only one that remains standing. Their business continued until 1988 when Mrs. Fuller died.

By then the house was virtually derelict (and quite full of furniture left behind or claimed by Mrs. Fuller as payment in lieu of rent!) but was saved by Terry Rich and partner who made substantial investments in upgrading and securing its future. In 2002 the house was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Silvano, who ran a successful management consultancy company.

Katrina Price Stilwell is the Principal Designer at Great Living Company LLC. Since moving to Houston in 2000, Katrina has always lived in the historic Houston Heights, making improvements one home at a time.  She now shares her flair for both design and decoration with clients throughout the Houston area (and those who’ve moved to other states or countries!).

She researched Houston for more than a year before deciding that the Heights was the most attractive and livable area given its proximity to downtown and its cultural and housing diversity. In 2012 Katrina bought the house and has remodeled and upgraded throughout.

Katrina has long been a patron of the arts, and loves the access to art, coffee, dining, shopping, spas and an eclectic and diverse mix of people. She named the beautiful home Uphouse Manor and opened up the doors for travelers to stay and enjoy the surroundings. Katrina loves to host and is happy to help with recommendations, reservations and introductions.

What our guests say:

We had an amazing night staying in this beautiful house. Katrina is incredibly nice and knowledgeable about the area and great places to visit. We will return as soon as possible for another night or two. The food was amazing and the company was even better!

We had a plumbing issue so I decided to book the 3rd floor of Uphouse Manor for one night! I absolutely LOVED my short stay! Everything was perfect; very clean and organized, lots of privacy, and the owner was a delight to talk with over a cup of coffee and breakfast!

I would highly recommend Uphouse Manor if you're looking for a short or long-term getaway!

I spent a week at Uphouse Manor while in town for a work trip. After long hours and late nights it was so comforting to come back to an actual house. The house is beautiful, with all the amenities needed to make you feel right at home. The hosts have all of your questions answered and your needs fulfilled with ease. The surrounding neighborhood has everything you need. Perfect location!
I highly recommend choosing Uphouse Manor over any hotel in Houston. The personal touches the host family provides makes you feel right at home. I will definitely be returning!

My wife and I are huge B&B fans and Uphouse is the best we have visited. The home is beautiful and the rooms are all unique. Katrina and her staff are warm and friendly and the breakfast is decadent.

The neighborhood has several very good restaurants in walking distance and is a great place to meet after work. Uphouse is my home away from home for my monthly visits to Houston.

My love, appreciation, and adoration for Uphouse (and the staff + mascots) is above and beyond measure. It's my go-to space for meeting clients as the energy and overall feel is warm, welcoming, and vibrant with life. Even when not meeting clients, I find myself being drawn there for it feels like home in many ways - Uphouse is more than a B&B to me, it's family. I highly recommend it for travelers as well as Houstonians just looking to "get away" without actually getting away. Go ahead, give it a go, you will only be pleasantly satisfied!
